Glossary

Attempt
The act of a team with possession of the ball trying to put out a member of the other team by throwing the ball at them.
Action
The time after the official time has started but before the game has ended, except when the referee has called time out.
Catch
The act of a player catching an attempt by the other team prior to the ball striking the ground or any other object not natural to the playing area. The ball can strike another player first. A player (who is out, after being struck by a ball) may return to the game after a valid catch by his team mate. Players return in the order they are struck out, First out First in (FOFI)
Dead ball
Declaration by the referee that an attempt has been nullified. A ball striking an referee is a dead ball; a kicked ball is a dead ball. An attempt made before the referee has started the game is also a dead ball. A ball thrown by a player who is out is a dead ball. The referee shall make a verbal call declaring the ball dead. The possession of the ball will change to the opposite team if a dead ball is called. The referee shall restart the game by bouncing the ball towards the team who have gained possession.
Dead zone
The area at the centre of the court separating the two playing areas. Players stepping into the dead zone are out as if they have been struck by an attempt.
Driven Ball
A ball that the referee deems has been delivered with force and intention. A driven ball may not be delivered intentionally to the head of any player.
Five seconds
A call by the referee that one team has had possession of the ball for 5 seconds prior to making an attempt. A player may pass the ball to another team mate but an attempt must be made within five seconds of receiving the ball inside the playing area.
Head Shot
A ball that strikes the head or shoulders of a player.
Interference
Occurs when an attempt is touched while over the normal playing area by a player from the player return area, an referee mis-positioned on the court or any person not involved in the game. Interference results in the declaration of a dead ball.
Kick
Any intentional contact of the ball with the foot of a player. Kicking the ball is illegal and results in a dead ball. If a player intentionally kicks the ball 3 times in a match they shall be out as if they have been struck by an attempt.
Lines
The lines sowing the boundaries of the pitch. The actual line is out of bounds.
Player Return Area
The area on one side of the court beginning the centre where players in the current game retire when 'out' by an attempt. Players must sit in the order they were out until the game is over.
Returnies
Allowing the return of players put out when a member of the same team catches an attempt of the other team before the attempt has struck the ground, wall or referee.
Taunting:
Verbally attacking the opposition in an unsportsmanlike manner as determined by the referee. Taunting is illegal; teams charged with taunting may forfeit the current game. Throw: another term for attempt.
